Had no power this morning, so I had to go to work. Them's the bitches, I should have brought my equipments because I have a strong desire to start spinning. (This is of course a kind of metaphorical spinning, as my hard drive is the only thing that actually spins). But what brought this on? A little song called "I look to you". It's great, and so are many of its remixes.
As a little snow day homework for all you folks who stay home, it's actually pretty fun to listen to the original and then figure out exactly what got changed in each remix. Below are some of the ones I liked.
The original is a really sweet little tune. I love the sexy vocals, and the disco energy that it exudes. But it's a little too downtempo for the main club - I think its got more of like an early-night kind of energy.
The real deal comes across better in the Go Go Bizkitt! remix: occasional vocals, reverbed retro buildups to awesome bass drops. It seems like its a little heavy on the highpass filter at one or two points, but the bass drop right after lets you know that you weren't waiting around for nothing. And at the end, it seems like he's adding the vocals in again but this time with a gater and brakedown effect. It's a great technique, and I'd love to learn how to do it live. I think this is my favorite.
The '96 Bulls remix adds in a much funkier bassline, adds the vocals in a bit more repetitively, and is pretty heavy on the sweeps. The buildup is longer and has more of an electro house drop to it, but I LOVE how well the vocals work towards the end. The synth line sounds cool, but I'm not sure what it's doing there. Also very nice of the '96 Bulls to leave a little thing at the end there for easy mixing. All in all, I like this one a lot and it's got great energy.
Holy shit that graphic... well played.
