I WILL DO MY SCIENTIFIC BEST TO COMMAND YOUR FLEET

Crystal Castles is by and large unlistenable for most people. I mean, more unlistenable even than what we usually post here on a daily basis. CC actively aurally assaults you. It's like an NES finally got fucking pissed enough at you for shooting light guns at it for days on end in the 80s that it decided it wanted revenge. In an evil, evil way. Ostensibly there is singing in these "songs" but in reality it's just banshee screaming on top of all the rest of the noise.

But this - this is Crystal Castles made listenable. CC and Robert Smith of The Cure somehow produced this actual gem of a song. It's so emo, it's even cute! Don't worry, I'll post real CC later.

Edit: for title context, here is CC's excellent song from their first album, the ever-so-common-for-debut-albums name: Crystal Castles. (Their second album's name isn't any better, the cleverly titled Crystal Castles II).

  1. What does any of this have to do with commanding fleets? Is this because yesterday was Navy Day? Did you even know that it was Navy Day yesterday?

Also, even the background synth of the remix is just too shrieky for me after the CC show at Sonar. But their well-produced stuff is good, it keeps it together often more than this. I feel like CC has a thing or two to offer the electronic music scene. They just need to decide which to keep: the shrieking synth lines, or the shrieking vocals. But not both.

  2. The quote is from a sample in the song "Magic Spells" off their first album. It's sweet.

  3. And I agree, I can't really listen to CC the same way after their live show. It was just so... I've never left a concert during the headliner before.

  4. Maybe Kieth would like it? ... Probably not, even he has standards. But I wonder what they are?

  5. Listen, I still love the studio albums. Love love love. But their live show changed something in my interpretation of them. They completely destroyed the melodic portions of the music in favor of sheer assaultive NOISE. I incorrectly assumed they would recreate some of my favorite (and frankly redeeming) parts of their musc.

This is why I like the songs I posted, including the one that's quoted in the title that I just put up there for context. It undoes some (but not all) of the damage their live show caused. Only some. CC, why did you let me down?

On the other side of the coin, all of the reviews I've read of their shows seem to be ejaculating all over the experience. I've been told that people seek them out multiple times to be ear-fucked. I'm attributing this solely to the fact that Alice Glass loses her shit, jumps into the crowd, and pours handles of Jack into their expectant mouths like so many baby birds destined to fall from the nest to their early demise.

The only good that came of their shows, as far as I'm concerned, was our introduction to the dubstep king Rusko. Thank God for that. Anyway, whatever. Post something new so we can forget all of this. PS, Grindcore, when the hell are you going to add to this wonderful blorg of ours?
