IT'S ALMOST SPRING IF YOU LISTEN TO THIS ALBUM

Much more effective than any subterranean rodent you might have heard of, Mr. Gonzo has released an album that is dripping with french funk vibes. This is the daft punk you remember, before they released Human After All and made a Tron single that will never work in the club. Except only Mr. Gonzo could be daft punk in the 2010's. It's jumpin', it's downtempo and loungey, it's whatever it needs to be for you to take your clothes off. I'm sure RB already has, and JJ was never wearing them to begin with.

Pairs well with cocktails, swimsuits, and a seductively raised eyebrow.

WHERE WAS THIS DEVICE DURING *MY* CHILDHOOD???

You certainly wouldn't have found it around my house. Thus the ineptitude. But maybe, JUST MAYBE, if I'd had a Red Rider BB Gun, I meeaaaaan a TYCO HOT KEYZ, my life would have been changed forever and I'd be the coolest kid on the block and have half a concept of what attack, decay, sustain, or release mean. But in another, more accurate way, I probably would have just broken it or forgotten about it once its D-sized batteries ran out and my parents refused to buy me any more because of the GAWDAWFUL RACKET.

Either way, Wahlström and Valiant (the first of which sounds vaguely scandinavian, to their credit) made a mix that uses this for everything but the drums. And it's amazing. Just think about it: little DJ PRETENTIOUS, age 9, playing this song. I know, it wouldn't have actually happened, BUT I CAN DREAM.

HOT KEYZ

KEYBOARD SYNTHS ARE SO DREAMY

Rejoice! I am actually posting a very listenable and objectively good song. While I'm remiss to stray from my usual hardcore dubstep, PO-PO are very much worth it.

Synthy keyboard + epic drums = awesome 80s throwback. This is NOT dancey. This is what they played at the end of 80s movies right before the credits. This is how you know the story is finally resolved. Trouble in your life? Drama? Disappointment? Don't worry. Play this song and everything is fixed!

I actually saw PO-PO live when they opened for Sleigh Bells back in June (interesting combo, yeah?). The image they projected was FAR different than the music they produced. I think one of them wore a giant vest emblazoned with teddy bears; the kind of thing overweight midwestern moms wear around Christmas. After the show and after a few beers on both our parts I talked to them at the merch table. Of the bands I've met they were BY FAR the most entertaining to hang out with. By the end of our conversation they were squirting beer directly into my mouth (and theirs) via tiny squirt guns in the shape of dolphins. I don't know. It was kind of awesome.

I think these guys will be big when their album, Big Tings, drops in early 2011. Keep your ears open! And before I entirely forget, here's the song:

FRIDAY: WE CAN FIND OUT THE SCIENCE

I know she's actually saying "We can fight our desires". But what I'm hearing is "We can find out the science", and for obvious reasons I think those lyrics are superior.

Shake it cross the dancefloooooor

There are plenty of remixes coming from this song, ranging from Chromeo's synthy remix to some more electro stuff with the Laidback Luke remix. But Chromeo's is too saucy and doesn't keep the bpm at an acceptable level. And the Laidback Luke mix is just a little too electro, and not enough funk.

But the Lifelike remix is just right, mostly. I think the deeper more progressive beat is awesome. But I think the beatsmooshing that's going on throughout most of the beat drops is generally annoying and could have been done much much better (maybe with some lessons from Bmore club), and so it really suffers. And so I've set up plenty of loop cues on the track to try and get the good parts out without including the fancy stuff because i can put that in myself and half the time it sounds better. See if you can figure out where I put them!

But none of this is really the original artist's fault. When you compare the vocal smooshing in the Lifelike remix to some of Treasure Fingers' original stuff, it's apparent that this guy knows how to arrange his shit. The use of melodic sampling (that the Helenator and I like from pogo) in Lift Me is totally sweet, and the beat and vocals in It's Love are right on. This is the stuff that's stuck in my head now, and probably my roommate's too because it's on my decks every fucking night. Not that I do anything successful with those decks, but it's on there damnit!

Further proof that scandinavians know what's up

Norway has fjords, and also SKWEEE, which is essentially 80s synth grooves played poorly but successfully.

VICTORY MONTAGE

For some awesome and amazing reason, DSJ (Dirty South Joe) and DJA (I don't know what that stands for) have combined forces to create the most epic thing ever. "Oh, that's just another exaggeration, another overuse of of the term 'epic'", you might be saying. But wait! Has any mix tape prior to this one so inspired you to engage in a training montage, to eventually emerge hungry for victory? I think not. This is the best combination of songs that has ever been assembled together. I can't even write this anymore, I'm too fucking amped to do anything but WIN!

Here's one of those songs that you've heard and you should like it. Mostly for that awesome synth line that ties it all together. BLEEPBOOBLEEPYBLEEPBOOBLEEPY. It's like a form of punctuation, and I wish I could use it in a sentence like a comma, or to delineate a new paragraph.
