GOLDMINE

DJ sets are good things. I've talked before about my love of essential mixes because I can get shit done without having to constantly change tracks and find songs I actually want to listen to. Now I pick an artist I like, hit play, and bam! An hour of hands-free listenin'. I'll finally do work. Maybe.

So where am I doing this? The Red Bull Music Academy Radio. Not entirely sure how many sets there are, but there are a lot. An excellent jumping off point is a search for "Notting Hill" -- it'll bring up a ton of the mixes from the mega-carnival that happens every year across the pond. Diplo? Major Lazer? Rusko? Dillon Francis? All there. Now go!

WHO NEEDS GENRES, ANYWAY?

Well this is something new. DJ Javier Estrada puts out some extremely novel tunes (Mad Decent accurately calls them "genre defying"), mixing up crunk, dubstep, moombahton, and Mexican beats. While you're wrapping your head around that, just listen to these tracks from his new mix:

You either loved those tracks or absolutely hated them, and if you're in the former camp you need to download the whole Ritmos del Mundo 3 mixtape right. now. It is the only thing that will save you from your awful Monday return to the office. Every track will surprise you. AND OH YEAH, THERE'S A MORTAL KOMBAT SAMPLE IN IT. It should also be said that we are way overdue for a post on moombahton. This is blowing up as fast as dubstep did last year and I really, really hope it won't turn into brombahton as quickly as Rusko's beats turned into brostep. Dear God I hope not. More on this later!

Hipster music video competition

THE HELENATOR and I were arguing last night over which of the following two hipster music videos (hereafter HMVs) was better. We need your help to resolve this argument. Please vote for your favorite HMV in the comments.

Basement Jaxx are back. In the past, BJ (lol) put out bubbly poppy catchy hits that invariably became instant hits at dance parties. Remember Romeo? Take Me Back To Your House? And most recently, Raindrops? BJ's newest single is not like the others. Dracula is mean. With driving guitars and a heavy beat, Basement Jaxx pushes the limits.

Beware the night. Dracula lurks.

If you're digging Dracula, The Prodigy has a bunch of awesome songs with the same feel. Nick and I are intimately familiar with at least one of these songs, as they made it onto the utterly destructive Apocolypse Dance Mix. It was played once and will never touch a CD player ever. again.

THAT'S RIGHT IT'S BARBARA STREISAND. BACK AGAIN, THIS TIME WITH A POSITIVE REVIEW. I heard the producers, A-Trak and Armand Van Helden on motherfucking NPR's all things considered on Saturday night. I think the song's great. I think the video's better.

In post-dubstep uk, night slugs rule the gutter (house)

Remember that stuff that THE HELENATOR likes? Well this new stuff is post-that. Really though, as detailed by the folks at Resident Advisor, the artists under the new Night Slugs label have been dropping an impressive series of tracks that are all actually interesting and awesome at the same time.

Night Slugs is flourishing within in an unprecedented climate of creative endeavour that has recently gripped UK bass music; innovation is a word that both Sushon and Connolly use liberally. "That is something that we have always had to a greater or lesser extent and that's why our music scene is cool," concludes Sushon when asked why the UK scene is in the midst of such a purple patch. "There is constantly a side of our music scene that doesn't give a shit and is trying to do something new at the expense of any kind of a rule book. I think that's what the UK has that some places don't at the moment. Currently there are two things going on: Firstly, because of the internet and the fact that people have started to pay attention to the UK... it seems like there is a new thing when there might not necessarily be a new thing. Secondly, amongst us guys and maybe our peers, there is a reaction against the more formulaic genres that dominate most of the clubs around the Western world. Formulas are shit and we don't want them, so that's why we don't do them."

Friday Throwback Remix

I don't know who makes this stuff. Who in the world has the persistence to listen to a shitty Eurythmics song, with all the dreadful 80s images that it conjures up - the coke, the hair, the legwarmers, the Ronald Reagan - who can sit through that long enough to bang out a masterful electro house remix? Probably the sort of person who, upon seeing a ford pinto rusting in an abandoned warehouse lot, speaks to it with hopeful words and promises to right the wrongs done by both its creation and subsequent neglect. And now as that ford pinto, its rims replaced with fresh bling, its windows tinted silver, as it drops the bass through our neighborhood we can look at it and almost forget that it ever was a ford pinto. Almost.
